Meet Dr. Shewmaker

After four years in the Navy as an Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Operator, Dr. Shewmaker obtained a degree in Biology from Eastern Michigan University and then a Master's degree in Biology from LSU. He taught high school and college science curricula before entering Medical School at Nova Southeastern University. In 2001, he purchased Sun Osteopathic Medical Center and slowly transformed it into a practice specializing in Aviation Medicine. The practice name was changed in 2010 to Shewmaker Medical Inc, which has remained for the past 12 years.

Dr. Shewmaker is a practicing osteopathic physician and Senior Aviation Medical Examiner. He is also a private pilot, avid weightlifter, scuba diver, and enjoys traveling during his free time.

DXA: How it Started

In building a new workout regimen, Dr. Shewmaker decided to utilize DXA to track his progress. In one year, at 58 years old, he was able to go from 20% in body fat to 11%, with an increase of four pounds in muscle mass. Using DXA revealed that his workout plan was efficient, motivating him to share this with his patients. He believed that if his patients could see their progress or starting point, it would encourage them to be in the best shape of their lives.

"My constant innovation to motivate patients to stay physically active and healthy throughout their careers has helped me define a purpose for my practice and thus a passion."
